Mount a Staghorn Fern Outside
Inspired by my trip to Norman’s, specifically their giant Platycerium in the lobby, I decided to try a Staghorn of my own. After a little research, I decided to give it a try outside. I think they’re okay in our climate so long as they stay in the shade, which is basically all my yard has, and it doesn’t freeze, which San Francisco almost never does. I picked out a nice looking little guy at Flora Grubb and brought him home.
I just removed him from his pot and packed him in the crook of the Victorian Box Tree in the back yard, securing him with a little fishing line. Growing in trees like this is how they grow in nature (though not native to San Francisco). If he likes it there I may have to come up with a more robust mounting, but this should be good enough to start.
