Apple Trees Planted
“Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces,
I would still plant my apple tree.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
To celebrate MLK day, Heather and I planted two apple trees in the back yard today. We picked them up at Annie’s Annuals yesterday, bare root. It was my first time buying a fruit tree, and the staff was really nice, helping us find trees that would be good for our weird yard (tiny, not much direct light).
We chose two varieties of apples: Hudson’s Golden Gem, which produces yellow and brown pear-like fruit; and Braeburn, which makes a more standard red apple. We got two so they can fertilize each other. We planted them close together, and are going to keep them pruned so they don’t take over the yard. (Like I said, tiny.)
Hopefully someday, if the world doesn’t go to pieces, we’ll celebrate life with some apples picked in our own back yard.
